If you鈥檙e an international student on a student visa, you must ensure your visa is valid for the duration of your studies at 黑料网.

Whether it鈥檚 your first application or an application to extend, it鈥檚 important you apply for your student visa as soon as you receive your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). It can take several weeks for applications to be processed.

You must comply with the conditions that are listed on your student visa, including when and how you can study, your academic progress and your ability to work.

The University of Canberra is required to report students who fail to comply with visa conditions to the Department of Home Affairs.

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

Main

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is compulsory health insurance for international students and their dependents. You must have arranged OSHC before you apply for your student visa and it must cover the duration of your degree.

Study load

Main

You need to be enrolled in a study load that enables you to complete your course by the end date stated on your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). This usually equates to a full-time study load 鈥� 12 credit points over a six-month period 鈥� with most of your units completed within standard teaching periods.

It鈥檚 important that you enrol in the required study load as you鈥檙e only able extend the duration of your study in the following situations:

  • you have compassionate or compelling circumstances and are able provide evidence
  • you鈥檙e at risk of not meeting your course progression requirements and have an intervention strategy in place
  • you have an approved deferral or suspension of enrolment.

You may not complete more than one third of your total course via online or distance learning methods, and you must be enrolled in at least one face-to-face unit each semester.

Change in address

Main

You must notify the University of both your Australian residential and mailing addresses within seven days of arriving in Australia. You must also notify the University within seven days if you change your address at any point during your studies.

Once you鈥檝e accepted your offer, you鈥檒l be given access to the UC student portal MyUC where you can make the updates.

Working in Australia

Main

On a student visa you鈥檙e allowed to work 48 hours per fortnight during standard teaching periods. This will probably mean part-time work 鈥� 24 hours per week 鈥� though you are permitted to work unlimited hours during university breaks. You won鈥檛 be able to begin working until your course has commenced.

If you're under 18 when you apply for an Australian student visa, you must have appropriate accommodation, support and welfare in place first.

You鈥檒l need to provide evidence of one of the following in your visa application:

  • a parent, custodian or relative aged over 21 who will accompany you on a Student Guardian visa (subclass 590)
  • living arrangements in Australia with a parent, custodian or relative over 21
  • a Confirmation of Appropriate Accommodation and Welfare (CAAW) letter from the University, which confirms the University has approved your care arrangements.

Please note that the parent, custodian or relative who will be accompanying you must remain in Australia for the duration of your visa or until you turn 18.

We鈥檒l send you a Welfare Arrangements Form with your offer to study at 黑料网 鈥� you'll need to complete this before we can issue your CoE.

If you require a CAAW letter from the University, you鈥檒l need to provide evidence of your guardianship and accommodation arrangements through either the:

The Australian Government promotes a safe and rewarding study experience where your rights as a student visa holder are protected under what鈥檚 known as the Education Services for Overseas Students or ESOS framework.

The ESOS framework guarantees you a quality education in Australia by establishing and upholding national standards for the provision of education and training services to international students.

We adhere to the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) legislative framework and provide support and information to help you understand and meet the expectations of you as an international student.

You can access the University policy library for information on rules and procedures relating to:

  • fees, including the charging, collecting and refunding of international fees
  • general and academic conduct
  • enrolment status changes
  • course progress
  • privacy.

UC is required to report students who fail to meet the conditions of their visa to the Department of Home Affairs.

As set out in the ESOS framework, your information may be made available to Commonwealth and state agencies if necessary.
