This is a problem oriented unit which requires students to learn and apply various fundamental finance concepts and tools for typical financial decision making by business enterprises within a framework of maximising shareholder wealth. Students are introduced to a range of concepts such as financial goals, time value of money, risk and return analysis, asset pricing, capital budgeting, cost of capital, capital structure, and dividend policies.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Explain the goals of financial management of a firm and basic finance principles, including the time value of money concepts, risk-return relationship, efficient market and portfolio diversification concepts;
2. Differentiate and explain theories and models used in investment, financing and dividend decisions;
3. Select and apply appropriate models and techniques to solve problems relating to the valuation of shares and bonds, alternative capital investment proposals, and to calculate cost of capital; and
4. Apply capital structure theories and dividend policies to solve problems involving financing and dividend distribution decisions.

Submission of assessment items

Special assessment requirements

Final grades in this subject will be assessed according to performance in each of the assessment items identified above. In order to pass this unit, you must obtain:

an overall total score of at least 50% AND

submit all assessment items marked as mandatory.

Furthermore, the use of AI is not permitted in this unit.

The University's position is that artificial intelligence services must not be used for assessment or assessment preparation by students unless explicitly allowed in the assessment instructions for an assessment task published with the assessment task and/or in the unit outline. That is, an AI service may only be used if:

a) its use is authorised by the unit convener as part of the specified task; and

Participation requirements

It is recommended that students attend all lectures and tutorials. However there is no mark for attendance.

Attendance is not compulsory, but the unit has been designed to encourage student engagement and active participation and so students who do not attend regular classes will be disadvantaged in terms of learning and feedback. 

Required IT skills

You are assumed to have adequate skills in the use of calculator, computer, word-processing, spreadsheet modelling and internet browsing. You are also assumed to be familiar with LearnOnline. If you feel you do not have adequate skills, please discuss the matter with the unit convener.
