Students are required to undertake an internship placement of 150 hours under the supervision of a professional practitioner in an appropriate workplace in the law and justice sector. Students will be exposed to and involved in the processes of applying practical skills and knowledge, including analysis, research, problem-solving and writing. Each student is required to analyse and reflect on the organisation and law and justice in action by preparing a research report, maintaining a reflective journal throughout (reflecting critically on their field of study) and produce a presentation highlighting skills obtained and/or skills to be honed, on his/her placement.

There will be at least three compulsory (assessable) workshop sessions held on campus where students will be exposed to preparing for an internship; generic and personal skills required; awareness; professional practices; relevant theories and services of the UC Careers office. Students would build on the professional planning modules in Foundations of Law and Justice.

This unit may be co-taught with a PG version of the unit.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Evaluate and report on the relationships between discipline specific theories and actual professional practice through self-directed learning;
2. Analyse discipline specific related practices and identify how these relations could be improved, including reflecting on how social and ethical issues in the workplace impact on practice;

4. Apply practical skills, including analysis, research, problem solving and writing in a law or justice workplace to solve a real legal or justice problem or problems.

Prerequisites

his unit is only available to students in a Bachelor of Laws or Bachelor of Justice Studies course.
Students must have passed 48 credit points before requesting enrolment in this unit.
Enrolment must approved by the Unit Convener and is dependent on the availability of a suitable placement.

There will be drop boxes on the unit Canvas site where you should submit all assessment items. If you experience difficulty in adding any item then you may submit it directly to the Unit Convener.

Participation requirements

Participation in this unit requires you to attend all workshops and attend in the workplace for 150 hours.

Students are expected to complete the "InPlace" software application that can be found on the Canvas site or UC website for this unit. Once populated with all the relevant details (including the Pre Place "Badge") the Unit Convenor will assess and approve if the placement is acceptable. Notification will then be generated and an email sent to both yourself and your placement Supervisor indicating this approval. There is also a Learner/Supervisor Agreement to be completed and this can be found on the unit Canvas site. Should you have any difficulties please email your Unit Convenor directly.

In-unit costs

There are no additional costs for this unit unless a "Police Check" or "Working with Minors" certificate is required. A total of approximately $30 should cover these checks/reports if required. The UC Career's Office can assist you should these be required.

Work placement, internships or practicums

As this unit involves a work integrated learning placement all students must adhere to University policy during WIL activities, including the Student Conduct Rules 2018, the WIL Policy and WIL Procedure, and the Assessment Policy and Assessment Procedure.

Remember this unit involves 150 hours of work placement to be completed either virtually or at your designated venue. Therefore, additional student responsibilities are required in addition to those described in this section. Work-place learning requires strict adherence to professional practice principles and ethics. Client/patient confidentiality must always be maintained, including for assessment items such as reports or essays.

Should you experience any unprofessional behaviour during your internship please let your unit convener know as soon as possible. The professional nature of this unit also requires 100% participation at all learning activities (virtual workshops, practicals etc. if scheduled 鈥� see section 3) for the successful completion of this unit (also see section 6c). If such requirements cannot be satisfied (e.g. timetable clash), it is recommended that you meet with your Course Convener to schedule this unit for a future semester.
