Students are required to undertake an internship placement of 300 hours under the supervision of a professional practitioner in an appropriate workplace in the law and justice sector. Students will be exposed to and involved in the processes of applying practical skills and knowledge, including analysis, research, problem solving and writing. Each student is required to analyse and reflect on the organisation and law and justice in action by preparing a research report, maintaining a reflective journal throughout (reflecting critically on their field of study) and produce a presentation highlighting skills obtained and/or skills to be honed, on his/her placement.

There will be at least four compulsory (assessable) workshop sessions held on campus where students will be exposed to preparing for an internship; generic and personal skills required; awareness; professional practices; relevant theories and services of the UC Careers office. Students would build on the professional planning modules in Foundations of Law and Justice.

This unit may be co-taught with a PG version of the unit.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Evaluate and report on the relationships between discipline specific theories and actual professional practice through self-directed learning;
2. Analyse discipline specific related practices and identify how these relations could be improved, including reflecting on how social and ethical issues in the workplace impact on practice;
3. Work individually and in groups to communicate their experiences both orally and in written form, with confidence and clarity; and
4. Apply practical skills, including analysis, research, problem solving and writing in a law or justice workplace to solve a real legal or justice problem/problem.

Prerequisites

This unit is only available to students in a Bachelor of Laws or Bachelor of Justice Studies course.

Students in a Bachelor of Laws must have passed at least 48 credit points and students in a Bachelor of Justice Studies must have passed at least 36 credit points before requesting enrolment in this unit.

Enrolment must approved by the Unit Convener and is dependent on the availability of a suitable placement.

Special assessment requirements

Please remember that as this is a 12 point professional unit of 300 hours, it is essential that your are in regular contact with your Unit Convener discussing your internship plan and progression. This will help ensure you meet the deadlines for your placement hours and assigned tasks over the semester.

Participation requirements

The professional nature of this unit requires your participation at all learning activities (online activities, workshops, practicals etc. if scheduled 鈥� see section 3) for the successful completion of this unit.

At least one week before the first day at your placement each student must complete the "InPlace" software programme which can be found on the Canvas or UC website where you will submit all details of your placement including the  business name; supervisor's name, addresses, email address, dates of internship etc BEFORE your Internship commences. When approved by the unit convener an email will be sent to both you and your supervisor indicating confirmation. Further details on how to use InPlace will be given during the first workshop in Week 1.

PLEASE NOTE: UC Careers has been rolling out the new and updated version of Pre Place. Pre Place is the module that requires completion by any student attending a placement/internship. From 2023, the latest version of Pre Place will be mandatory for any student attending WIL regardless of whether you have completed the older version before 2023. All internship students will be required to upload required documents, and complete the training, at which time it will be graded (Careers UC will handle this for you) and you will receive a "badge" that you can use as proof of upload in your Canvas InPlace.  Bec Osbourne (Bec.Osbourne@canberra.edu.au) from UC Careers can assist you with accessing and undertaking this new module.

Additionally you are required to complete 300 hours in the workplace.

In-unit costs

No additional costs beyond your travel, accommodation expenses, a police check  (if required - currently these cost approximately $29) together with your normal unit enrolment fee are anticipated. If you are working with children you may also require a current working with children approval certificate (currently these are free for unpaid internship positions). If you require this certificate and/or a Police Check, information regarding the steps involved in obtaining these can be found at www.canberra.edu.au/placement. 

Work placement, internships or practicums

This unit involves "professional practicum" and therefore, additional student responsibilities are required in addition to those described in this section. Work-place learning requires strict adherence to professional practice principles and ethics. Client/patient confidentiality must always be maintained, including for assessment items such as reports or essays. The professional nature of this unit also requires 100% participation at all learning activities (lectures, practicals etc. if scheduled 鈥� see section 3) for the successful completion of this unit (also see section 6c). If attendance requirements cannot be satisfied (e.g. timetable clash), it is recommended that you meet with your Course Convener to schedule this unit for a future semester.
