The syllabus is based on the requirements of the Australian Psychological Accreditation Council. Students will undertake an individual supervised research project in psychology, comprising topic definition, literature review, design, data analyses, and write up a thesis of between 8,000 and 10,000 words. The project will be conducted within appropriate ethical guidelines. The topic will reflect the mutual interests of supervisor and student.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Design and execute a research project relating to a psychological issue to a standard acceptable to the profession;
2. Independently undertake an analysis of data derived from quantitative and/or qualitative designs in psychology; and
3. Communicate the results of an independent research project in a form acceptable to the profession.

Must have passed or be enrolled in 10112 Research Methods in Psychology PG.

Corequisites

Must be enrolled in 769AA Bachelor of Science in Psychology (Honours).

The thesis should be presented in APA style such as described in:

APA (2020). Publication manual of the American Psychological Association (7th ed.). Washington, DC: APA.

UC students have to complete the annually to learn about academic integrity and to understand the consequences of academic integrity breaches (or academic misconduct).

Participation requirements

With the exception of assessment-based workshops, all workshops are optional; however, attendance is strongly encouraged.

Regular meetings should be arranged with the project supervisor. In general, supervisors should be available for individual consultation for 30 to 60 mins of face-to-face contact per week during Semester 1 and 2.

Required IT skills

It is assumed that students have good word processing skills and knowledge of SPSS/Jamovi.

Role of thesis supervisors

Thesis supervisors are expected to provide timely and sufficiently detailed written and verbal comments on:

  1. An initial outline
  2. A draft proposal
  3. Two drafts of the manuscript (except Discussion)

(provided drafts are submitted within the agreed timeframe to receive feedback). 

The Discussion section of the research article can be discussed with the supervisor, but the supervisor will not provide comments on a written draft. It is important that students demonstrate their own understanding of the research through the Discussion.

Formatting (including APA style), accuracy, proofreading, and completeness of the reference sections is the student's responsibility.
