We offer counselling in undergraduate programs with a minor and a breadth major in counselling, as well as Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Masters of Counselling.

As a student in our Graduate Diploma and Masters counselling courses, you will learn to work holistically with a diverse range of client concerns from across the lifespan, valuing social and cultural contexts. You will demonstrate competence in rapport building, empathy, reflective listening, case formulation and clinical interventions. A core component of the training is a university facilitated work placement. This provides practical professional experience that will prepare you for future employment.

PhD Opportunities

The Discipline also offers a small PhD program. The PhD is a research-oriented degree tailored to professionals striving for academic distinction and the advancement of knowledge in counselling in Australia and internationally. This program is designed to delve into topics that reflect practical expertise with scholarly investigation. More specifically, the degree endeavours to cultivate a theoretical framework that offers insights into questions of significance in counselling.

The PhD offers a three/four year full-time or equivalent part time program leading to a thesis of approximately 80,000-100,000 words in length. Your thesis should reflect original research with critical analysis and scholarly implications for the profession.

Counselling requirements for PhD entrance

When assessing applications for higher degrees by research, we will consider your performance in previous tertiary study and any relevant professional experience you may have.

For entry into the PhD degree, you will need to have completed the following:

• a Master's degree in counselling
• 3-5 years practical counselling or psychotherapy experience
• In addition to your tertiary qualification, you’ll need to show advanced knowledge in the form of a research proposal that reflects your research topic.
