About CARAT
The University of Canberra’s Centre for Ageing Research and Translation brings together researchers from a range of disciplinary backgrounds, whose interests and activities coincide through a shared focus on ageing research as it relates to health and wellbeing: living to age well and ageing to live well.
In keeping with the University of Canberra’s focus on research which makes a difference to society, our research targets the evidence base underpinning practices, programs and policies that affect the health and well-being of older people, whether they live in their own homes, with family, in residential care or elsewhere.
CARAT leads the knowledge translation cycle of evidence-based care by providing expertise on translating evidence into policy and practice, educating the next generation of students in applying evidence into practice as well as collecting and creating new evidence as clinicians and researchers.
Our research collaborations include the disciplinary areas of epidemiology, nursing, economics, social science, public health, policy analysis, dietetics, food and nutrition science, physiotherapy, pharmacy, occupational therapy, speech pathology, optometry, psychology, and exercise science.
Our external partnerships are local, regional, national and international involving other universities, government, national institutions, health and aged care services and technology industries ensuring we can stay at the forefront of ageing research in the ACT region and enabling opportunities for broader impact.
The Centre for Ageing Research and Translation is an Australian Association of Gerontology (AAG) Collaborating Research Centre.
We have three core areas of activity: Dementia and cognition, Innovative care models and Workforce.

Are you a care partner of a person living with dementia in the ACT region? Would you like to be a part of the ‘Care partners of people with dementia: perceptions of post-diagnostic support services’ study. Your participation will contribute to a better understanding of support services and how they meet the needs of people with dementia and their care partners in the ACT region. Please find a link to the survey to share your perceptions and experiences.
If you are interested in being involved in our research, volunteering, employment or HDR opportunities please contact us.
This project seeks to explore where small-scale residential dementia care is located in Australia and investigate the characteristics and features of each care setting.
The information gained from the research will be used to improve the understanding of where small-scale residential dementia care is located in Australia, the philosophy of each care setting and how the physical, care and social environments are described.
If you know of any small-scale care residential dementia care homes in Australia, please complete the short survey using the following link.
