Working in research
UC is bold and competitive. We push ourselves to contribute to academia on the world stage and have a strong sense of service to our region. Since our foundation as a college in 1967, becoming a university in 1990, we have dedicated ourselves to become part of the fabric of this region.
Research makes an impact on our communities and Australia, and UC is the place where you can make your mark on our region, enhance the learning environment for our students, and make a global impact within the world of research. Whether that be as a researcher, research student, or professional staff member supporting research and enterprise within a faculty, research centre, institute, or business unit.
We engage industry, community and academic partners to uncover new knowledge, design and implement practical solutions, and deliver impact that matters. UC is values-driven, diverse, and globally recognised for reducing inequalities.
As a smaller and agile university, collaboration comes naturally. From networking at one of our on-campus coffee shops to shared research spaces and multidisciplinary staff networks and research groups, you will meet collaborators and peers beyond and complementary to your field.
Channel your skills towards a greater purpose at the University of Canberra.
UC research covers a range of disciplines across our five faculties and research centres and institutes, and we have a strong focus on multidisciplinary research to solve complex local and global problems.
We want to build the best environment for our people to excel in quality research and teaching. Our ambitious plan for research at the University has led to reimagining our researcher development (UC ReD) programs to service various researcher career stages, and developing an impact framework to support researchers and teams to design, undertake, disseminate and integrate research that makes an impact within and beyond academia.
The University’s Performance Expectations for Academic Staff (PEAS) focus on supporting our academics to establish and progress their career, in addition to achieving traditional performance measures. UC is committed to supporting our early career researchers with our UC ReD IGNITE program, a small cohort experience focussing on personalised support and tailored training to complement in-faculty mentoring. Our centrally funded Outside Studies Program is an opportunity for academic staff to immerse themselves in another research environment at another institution or organisation for their professional growth and career development.
If a role suiting your skills and expertise is not currently advertised, consider submitting an expression of interest to one of our faculties on the .

UC is committed to developing our future researchers and highly skilled professionals. Our higher degree by research (HDR) candidates collaborate with academics and other researchers in our centres, institutes and faculties to produce new knowledge and expertise in their chosen research field.
Many of our research students contribute to coursework degrees, learning through teaching and developing core skills for an academic. There is also a range of research scholarships available to support research students over the course of their studies.
UC’s HDR candidates have opportunities to work directly with industry partners, driving cutting-edge research and solutions that deliver tangible benefits to organisations and the wider community. Our Doctor of Philosophy (PhD Plus) program offers additional industry-connected opportunities, helping candidates develop the skills needed for careers in academia, industry, or both.
UC’s research degree offerings:
- Doctor of Philosophy
- Professional Doctorate (discipline-specific)
- Master by Research
I was always drawn to how we think, and what factors affect our thinking. When combined with my interest in technology, I found myself in human-computer interaction, human-robot interaction, and Artificial Intelligence.

… The way teaching is delivered continues to evolve, but the principle of UC’s sports program has remained the same. The original purpose of developing new scientists, researchers, academics, administrators and sporting officials, as well as new knowledge and innovation, is still being served.

Research doesn’t have to be scary, and it can solve real world and immediate problems that schools are facing – and from my experience, you don't have to look very far to find something worth tapping into.
