Our higher degree by research (HDR) candidates collaborate with academics and other researchers in research centres and institutes to produce new knowledge and expertise in their chosen research field. As a research candidate, you鈥檒l have the opportunity to engage with industry, government and the community so your research is driven by a big-picture context and can be applied practically.

If you aspire to have a career in academia, become an expert in your profession, or embark on a project you鈥檙e passionate about, higher degree by research may be for you.

Combines professional training as a clinical psychologist with doctoral research. After graduation, you can work as a practising psychologist.

You鈥檒l undertake an original investigation in your chosen field or topic, which is more limited in scope than a PhD or Professional Doctorate.

As an HDR candidate, you鈥檒l be supported throughout your candidature by a panel of experts in their field. Your supervisor panel will help you solve any problems you face during your research, develop transferable skills and progress your thesis.

It鈥檚 important you find a supervisor aligned with your research topic before you apply. Our faculty staff can help you identify the right supervisor for you, making sure they're suited to your field of study and research project aspirations.

To be considered for admission to a research degree, you鈥檒l need to meet the degree鈥檚 minimum entry requirements. These will vary depending on the course you choose.

Fees

The costs involved in higher degree research depend on what category of student you are and what and how you鈥檒l be studying.

If you鈥檙e an Australian or New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident or humanitarian visa holder, you鈥檙e eligible for a scholarship from the Australian Government to reduce the amount you pay.

If you鈥檙e an international student, you鈥檙e required to pay your course tuition fees to UC for the duration of your degree.

Full-time or part-time study

Study full-time or part-time

If you鈥檙e a domestic candidate, you can choose to embark on your research part time. If you鈥檙e an international candidate holding a student visa, you鈥檒l need to undertake your research full time to meet the conditions of your international student visa. International candidates who are studying offshore or who hold an alternative visa may be eligible to enrol part time. You can request to defer your offer for a place in a research degree for six or 12 months from the start date in your offer letter.
